Provincial government will be opening 50 new pot shops starting in the fall

First Published:

50 new pot shops are set to open in Ontario 42 regionally and 8 on first nations. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will once again be holding a “lottery” to select the shops.

19 of which will be opening in the greater Hamilton and Toronto area a first come first serve process will determine the eight set to open on first nations. Since legalization, there have been issues at some retail locations such as demand far exceeding federal supply.

The attorney general says the reason for opening new stores, is because there have actually been improvements in supply. It was announced that Canada’s “Canopy Growth” CEO Bruce Linton was out.

Linton claimed in an interview he was terminated, amid poor fourth-quarter results. In Ontario, retailers must purchase all their product from the government-run Ontario cannabis store. To enter the lottery, applicants will have to show evidence that they have a brick and mortar retail space ready to go, with enough capital to open.

The lottery will begin on August 20th.
