Prime Minister to discuss gun violence with Toronto mayor

First Published:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to meet with Toronto mayor John Tory Tuesday to discuss possible strategies to combat gun violence.

The meeting comes just a day after the federal, provincial and municipal governments announced they would jointly offer $4.5 million to Toronto police to tackle gun crime.

Toronto has seen a rise in shooting incidents over the past two years.

Toronto police have been grappling with the spike in gun violence, with 14 separate shootings reported over the recent long weekend alone.

Police believe the majority of those incidents were gang-related.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said he will reveal his plans to battle gun violence in the coming days.
