A former coal-fired power plant -which at one point was the largest in the world – finished up its final demolitions today.
The nearly 50-year-old powerhouse in Nanticoke came down with a bang in just 30 seconds.
Dennis Randall was there in the 1970’s when it was built, and was there today to see it come down. to help build it in the 1970’s.
“It’s a bit of a cradle to grave experience for me.”
Seventeen years ago the Ontario government decided to no longer allow energy plants to burn coal for electricity come 2015 to reduce emissions.
Therefore the Nanticoke Generating Station shut down in 2014. Demolitions began with the twin stacks last year and finished with the powerhouse today.
At it’s peak around 600 people were employed inside the powerhouse and about 300-400 contactors around it.
The Ontario Power Generation will now move to green energy.
