Power outages possible with strong winds expected to hit GHA

First Published:

A special weather statement has been issued for the Golden Horseshoe Area (GHA) with strong winds expected to hit the region.

Environment Canada says Hamilton, Halton, Niagara, Haldimand and Brant County will experience strong winds on Monday that will continue through the evening.

The weather agency says wind gusts will reach up to 80 km/h.

The special weather statement warns that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, and break branches off trees.

It says power outages are possible.

A weather advisory has also been issued for Caledon.

Strong and gusty westerly winds will bring in fresh arctic air along with lake effect flurries from Lake Huron.

Snow squalls from Lake Huron may occasionally extend inland to the region. The lake effect flurries will slowly weaken beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Canada says snowfall accumulations of 2 to 5 cm are possible over a 2 to 4 hour period.

There may be low visibility in blowing snow and brief bursts of heavy snow.

A winter weather travel advisory is in effect beginning Monday evening.

Drivers should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Motorists are being urged to slow down driving in slippery conditions, watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance.
