UPDATE
A man is in custody following a five-hour standoff with Niagara police that forced residents to take shelter in their basements.
Police responded to a call about a male in crisis around 7:20 a.m. Thursday at a home in the area of Rebstock Rd. and Brunswick Ave.
Niagara police say they received “credible information” that there was a firearm in the residence and contained the man inside the home.
A rescue vehicle from Halton Regional Police was brought in to assist along with members of the Niagara Police Service K-9 Unit.
Several homes in the immediate area were evacuated as police made several attempts at making contact with the man.
“Working with our Emergency Task Unit and our crisis negotiators we were able to make numerous attempts at establishing communication. From loud hailing and even delivering a phone to the residence,” said Gavin.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., the man surrendered to police and was arrested. He is facing a number of weapons charges.
