Niagara police are investigating after a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted on a trail in Thorold Wednesday evening.

Officers say the woman was hiking alone around 5:30 p.m. at Mel Swart Lake Gibson Conservation Park. She sat on a park bench along the trail to take a break. An unknown man sat next to her and started talking. He then sexually assaulted her.

An adult woman and her daughter walked up and stopped the man. He ran from the area.

The adult woman brought the victim back to the parking lot, where she contacted police.

Niagara police are looking for a white man who is tanned, approximately 30 to 40 years old and has freckles on his cheeks, light brown short hair, a moustache and brown eyes. He is approximately five-foot-eleven and 200 to 220 lbs with a broad muscular build.

He was last seen wearing a charcoal grey hooded sweatshirt with an unknown white logo over the left side chest area with white drawstrings in the hood and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009450.
