Police across Southern Ontario are looking for an escaped convict from Georgia tonight. 32-year old Anthony Joseph Maiorano was spotted during a routine traffic stop in Oakville this afternoon. And the elusive convict, is still on the run.

Anthony Joseph Maiorano is supposed to be in prison in Savannah, Georgia. He was sentenced to 20 years for aggravated assault. But instead, Halton regional police spent roughly four hours this afternoon, combing through an Oakville neighbourhood, in pursuit of the wanted felon.

Inspector Kevin Maher, Halton Police: “So at approximately 2:15 this afternoon, a uniformed patrol sergeant from the Halton regional police attempted to stop a vehicle just north of Upper Middle on Sixth Line, and a male occupant, passenger in the vehicle, fled from the car.”

Police say they didn’t know that it was Maiorano who bolted from the car. But in short order, they had called in several units, including a tactical squad, canine unit and assisting officers from the Toronto Police Service.

A nearby school was placed in a temporary hold, until anxious parents arrived to pick up their kids.

All the while, police were searching a nearby townhouse complex, where they believed Maiorano may have been holed up — but the fugitive, had disappeared — prompting an alert, across Southern Ontario.

Inspector Maher: “We’re working in conjunction with the other GTA police services, including the Toronto Police Service, their fugitive squad as well as the OPP.”

Maiorano’s criminal record, includes convictions for possession of cocaine, and other restricted drugs. He has been at large since April when he walked away from the Coastal Transfer Centre, in Savannah, Georgia.

Tonight, there is no word on the search for Maiorano but police do suggest that if you see him, do not approach. He was convicted of aggravated assault, and is considered dangerous. Instead they advise you to contact your local police department, and report his whereabouts.
