Police concerned over high number of stunt driving tickets

First Published:

Stunt driving is an umbrella term that covers several offences including travelling 51 km/h above the speed limit. Hamilton police say they’ve handed out 44 stunt driving tickets this year.

On the provincial level, that number soars to over 3,100. Constable Claus Wagner says his biggest concern is that police are ticketing the same offenders.

“Our oldest person was 66 years old and has received a ticket almost for every year since they got their driver’s licence.”

Despite the confidence, 21 people “so far” have died due to stunt driving on Ontario roads. If your life isn’t enough, those ticketed will have their licence suspended immediately and the car impounded for one week.

If convicted, first-time offenders must pay up at least $2,000 to as much as $10,000. Drivers could also end up with six months jailtime and a 2 year licence suspension.

Police say loved ones should step in if they suspect they know someone who tends to drive dangerously. The OPP also mention how those driving “too slowly” also pose a danger to others, Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says sometimes slow drivers in the far left lane incite others to drive aggressively.
