Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is using the international stage and a London audience to pitch his Syrian refugee plan, as an example of Canada’s unique diversity to the world.

The newly elected PM gave a speech at Canada House in London, England this morning, and spoke about Canada’s inclusive nature.

Trudeau says quote, “We have a responsibility, to ourselves and to the world, to show that inclusive diversity is a strength and a force that can vanquish intolerance, radicalism and hate.”

The Prime Minister’s agenda also included visiting the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Afterwards he tweeted, “Very nice to meet with the Queen today. I was much younger the last time.” Trudeau was a child in the 1970s when he was first introduced. His father, the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was Canada’s Prime Minister at the time.

After Trudeau’s private audience with Queen Elizabeth, he had his first official state visit with British Prime Minister David Cameron. British media and cheering members of the public watched Cameron greet Trudeau at 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s residence. Trudeau remarked that the last time he was there was again, as a young boy while his father met with then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Trudeau and Cameron talked about a wide range of issues including fighting terrorism, climate change and accepting Syrian refugees. Trudeau later delivered his government’s message about extending the deadline to accept 25-thousand refugees past the end of the year and continuing the immigration into January and February.

Trudeau leaves the United Kingdom tomorrow for Malta, where the 54-country commonwealth is holding its leaders’ summit. Today was just the start of his six-day European visit that will wind up in Paris at the U.N climate conference.
