Plug pulled on Nanticoke

First Published:

Ontario Power Generation says its Nanticoke Generating Station will never produce power again.

While the 42-year-old plant burned its last coal at the end of 2013, four of the eight generating units were being maintained and the plant kept heated for possible conversion to natural gas or biomass in the future.

Ontario Power Generation now says that will not happen — although it might someday at the closed Lambton station near Sarnia, which is near a major natural gas line.

OPG is still hoping to install solar panels on the 800-acre Nanticoke property, but the 30 remaining employees will lose their jobs.

Nanticoke once employed 650 people and powered 2.5 million homes.  It was the largest coal-fired generating station in North America.
