A week of delays and a false start in the air, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to sign a major trade deal with the European Union, Sunday.
Trudeau’s plane departed about 90 minutes late, Saturday night, then was forced to return to Ottawa about 30 minutes after it took off because of a mechanical problem.
Trudeau was expected to sign the CETA agreement days ago but the Belgian region of Wallonia took issue by opposing it and held a veto over Belgium’s ability to support the deal that must have the approval of all 28 EU countries.
The issues were resolved earlier in the week with officials to close the deal at a ceremony in Brussels, Sunday.
The Prime Minister will be meeting with the presidents of the European Council and European Commission as well as the head of the European Parliament and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard, who has also arrive in Brussels.
The agreement has been several years in the making.
