Kabul airport attack kills 60 Afghans, 12 US troops

First Published:

A second suicide attack explosion has gone off outside Kabul airport.

An Afghan official says at least 60 Afghans were killed and 143 wounded.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the first explosion outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

U.S. officials said 12 U.S. service members were killed, including 11 Marines and a Navy medic. A U.S. official said the complex attack was believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State group.

The news comes just after Canada’s military aircraft left Afghanistan earlier today.

Several countries have warned about a possible attack on Kabul’s airport as thousands of Afghans desperate to flee Taliban rule gathered there.

New warnings emerged overnight from Western capitals about a threat on the airport from Afghanistan’s Islamic State group affiliate.
