Pedestrians walk, run and cycle during Open Streets Hamilton

First Published:

From John Street to Gage Avenue, King Street was closed to vehicular traffic for several hours on Sunday.

It’s an annual event held by the City of Hamilton that promotes physical activity, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion.

Along King Street, there were five main “activity hubs” at the intersections of John Street, Wellington Street, Wentworth Street, Sherman Avenue, and Bernie Morelli Secondary School.

Peter Topalovic, a city worker who helped coordinate the event, says it’s a way for people to connect with their city.

“This is part of a growing trend in North America that started in Columbia, since the seventies,” he says. “To have streets that are more like parks.”

He adds that the tentative plan is to have the event move to different neighbourhoods throughout the year.

Another Open Streets event is scheduled to take place later this summer, on June 23.
