(Updated) Rain, wind and flood warnings are in place as a storm moves across Southern Ontario today.

The storm is driven by the remnants of Hurricane Patricia merging with a clipper system coming from the west, and it could deliver between 45 and 55 millimetres of rainfall today. Strong wind gusts between 40 to 70 kilometres per hour are also possible during the storm and could cause power outages and some tree or property damage.

Horizon Utilities is warning customers to be prepared for possible power outages. Residents are asked to call 911 if they see wires that have been knocked down or fallen on a tree. If you see a downed power line you’re asked to stay at least 10 metres, or the length of a school bus away from it.

If flood water rises above power cords, or near service panels or outlets, customers are asked to call Horizon Utilities, or their local power provider.

You’re also reminded to keep cell phones charged, and keep an emergency kit with items like a battery operated radio, a flashlight with batteries, candles and matches, water and non-perishable food items.

Police are reminding drivers to slow down on highways and city streets as the rainfall is making the roads treacherous. Vehicles have struck several pedestrians throughout the region.

As well, many sports fields are closed because of the storm. Anyone flying out of Pearson or Hamilton airport should check with their airline about possible delays or cancellations.
