Organizers of Loblaw boycott call for indefinite extension

First Published:

Organizers of a month-long boycott targeted against Loblaw-owned grocery stores say they plan to extend the movement indefinitely.

On Tuesday, the movement issued a statement on its subreddit page, saying a recent poll found that an overwhelming majority of its members supported extending the boycott.

“The community has spoken and shown great support for extending the boycott and remaining focused on Loblaw. We look forward to seeing our impact once Q2 financials are released.”

A recent Leger poll found that 70 per cent of Canadians surveyed were aware of the boycott and more than half supported it.

While only 18 per cent of the sample said they were participating in the boycott, many experts say the push to avoid the grocery chain has been effective.

“We’ve actually seen more Canadian’s looking for other options beyond the big five,” said Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, professor of food distribution and policy.

“We’re seeing more traffic towards independent grocers, and that’s a good thing — it’s going to help smaller grocers get more business, and frankly, some of these grocers offer really good deals, and people are starting to notice.”

When asked about the ongoing consumer boycott against its store, a Loblaw spokesperson pointed to its most recent earnings report and said it noticed an increase in customers since its past quarter, particularly at its discount locations.

Dave Bauer, Loblaw’s media relations director, said many Canadians are “finding real value through programs like Hit of the Month and PC Optimum and saving more through our promotions.”

“We know we must win our customers’ business each and every day,” he said. “That hasn’t changed – we’re going to keep working hard to deliver on our commitment to value and to rebuild the trust grocers have enjoyed for more than 100 years.”
