Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning residents to practice extra caution near ice-covered water.
Earlier this week, regions in Ontario experienced plummeting temperatures, causing ice to form on several bodies of water.
OPP says the strength of ice can be affected by many factors including temperature, thickness, currents, age of the ice, pressure cracks and snow cover.
Residents who are venturing out onto ice-covered water for recreational activities should assess the conditions before stepping onto the surface.
OPP has offered the following safety tips:
- Check the weather. Avoid ice-related activities on warm or stormy days.
- Children should never play on or near ice-covered bodies of water.
- Avoid vehicle travel on ice.
- Never go onto the ice alone. A buddy may be able to rescue you or go for help if necessary.
- Wear a thermal protection buoyant suit to increase your chances of survival should you go through the ice. Carry ice picks, an ice staff, rope and a cell phone with you.
- Do not drink alcohol or consume other drugs. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reduce your body’s ability to stay warm in cold conditions.
If you do happen to fall in, police say to stay calm, pull your arms up onto the ice and try to bring yourself into a horizontal position by kicking your feet to propel yourself back onto the ice and roll in the direction you came from.
