Opera Hamilton singing blues over Hamilton Place rent

First Published:

Opera Hamilton is looking for a new home.

It says Hamilton Entertainment and Convention Facilities Incorporated – HECFI – charges twice as much for Hamilton Place, as comparable halls in other major cities. Opera Hamilton is charged about 63-hundred dollars to use the Great Hall for each performance. That compares to about two-thousand dollars in Calgary and Edmonton, and about three-thousand in Winnipeg.

HECFI CEO Duncan Gillespie points out that Opera Hamilton only sold 60% of the seats for its last performance. “The Great Hall at Hamilton Place is one of the premiere venues in the country, it’s an expensive operation and it’s not for everybody.”

“There’s lots of other organizations that would love to put their performances on at the Great Hall in Hamilton. They’re not at that level. Opera Hamilton was, wasn’t, isn’t again. Hopefully will be in the future.”

Gillespie argues the prices at Hamilton Place are consistent with market rates in the Golden Horseshoe.
