Ontario’s police watchdog called in following death of a man in St. Catharines

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died following an interaction with Niagara police.

Officers were called to a home in the area of Russell Ave. and Lake St. in St. Catharines for a report of a man in crisis around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The man was armed with a knife.

Police say the force’s emergency task unit and crisis negotiators were called out of an abundance of caution.

Negotiations continued until about 6:20 p.m. when police say the man was transported to hospital with injuries. He was pronounced dead.

The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate.

The agency look as reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
