Ontario reports 958 COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths

Ontario reported 958 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday as vaccinations begin in our region for people 80 and older.

The daily case count comes as the province completed 52,613 tests. The reported positivity rate, which takes into account the date tests were done, is 2.4 per cent.

The death toll is now 7,014 people as 17 more deaths were reported.

Another 1,090 cases have been marked as resolved.

Hamilton

  • 10,589 total cases — up 43 from Tuesday
  • 9,731 resolved cases
  • 410 active cases
  • 283 deaths
  • 38,644 vaccine doses given

Halton

  • 9,576 total cases — up 38 from Tuesday
  • 9,127 resolved cases
  • 251 active cases
  • 198 deaths — up two from Tuesday

Niagara

  • 8,647 total cases — up 32 from Tuesday
  • 8,111 resolved cases
  • 167 active cases
  • 369 deaths
  • 10,973 vaccine doses given

Brant

  • 1,500 total cases — up two from Tuesday
  • 1,440 resolved cases
  • 48 active cases
  • 12 deaths
  • 8,401 vaccine doses given; 2,536 people fully vaccinated

Haldimand-Norfolk

  • 1,434 total cases — up four from Tuesday
  • 1,363 resolved cases
  • 27 active cases
  • 39 deaths
  • 5,885 vaccine doses given; 1,573 people fully vaccinated

Six Nations

  • 367 total cases — up one from Tuesday
  • 248 resolved cases
  • 116 active cases
  • 3 deaths
  • 4 people hospitalized

The province says it gave out another 27,398 vaccine doses since the last report. A total of 754,419 doses have been given.

There are 266,710 people who have received both vaccine doses and are fully vaccinated.

There are now 552 cases of the B.1.1.7 lineage of the virus, first reported in the U.K., up ten cases from Tuesday.

The other variants of concern remained steady. There are 27 cases of the B.1.351 strain first reported in South Africa and three cases of the P.1 strain first reported in Brazil.

The number of patients in hospital with the virus has dropped from 677 to 668.

The number of patients in ICU is also down from 284 to 274 and there are 188 people on ventilators.
