Ontario Party Leaders promise a break at the pumps as prices soar

First Published:

At the start of a long weekend, leaders of the Ontario election campaign were talking about how they’d take the pain out of gas prices.

New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath was campaigning virtually while she recovers from COVID-19.

“The NDP will take the pain out of the visit to gas stations,” Horwath said.

Horwath said her government would lower gas prices right away and permanently, by having the Ontario Energy Board set the maximum price each week, “by regulating the wholesale and retail price we’ll make sure that what you pay is fair.”

Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca is also promising to make life more affordable by cutting gas taxes, “people are hurting. people are struggling,” Del Duca said.

“When we take 5.7 cents off the gas tax and 5.3 cents off the fuel tax it’s not just going to make life more affordable at the pumps it’s going to help throughout the rest of the supply chain,” Del Duca said.

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford has already promised to cut gas taxes for six months and is calling for a cut in the federal carbon tax of eleven cents a litre on gas.

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner is also campaigning virtually because of a COVID-19 infection. He met with students online as he announced student loan breaks, and said tax cuts on gas aren’t enough.
