Ontario health officials say 3rd case of coronavirus is now ‘resolved’

Ontario health officials say the province’s third case of the 2019 novel coronavirus is now resolved.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams says the person in London, Ont who was confirmed to have the virus on Jan. 31 is no longer infected following additional testing by both the Public Health Ontario Laboratory and the National Microbiology Lab.

“The case has had two negative tests at least 24 hours apart and is therefore considered to be resolved. This means the individual is no longer infectious with the 2019 novel coronavirus,” said Williams in a news release Wednesday morning.

Williams reassured the public the risk from the coronavirus remains low. He thanked health care professionals for their continued efforts in “containing the virus and protecting the health and well-being” of the public.

The new coronavirus has now infected more than 45,000 people globally. More than 1,100 people have died; all but one of those fatalities was in China.

The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The new designation makes no reference to animals, places or people associated with the virus in order to avoid stigma.
