The City of Hamilton has put the Nuisance Party bylaw into effect from Thursday to Sunday, ahead of homecoming at McMaster.
On a post on X made Tuesday morning, the city announced that the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) was in effect from Thursday at 11:59 p.m. to Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
The city designed and first implemented the bylaw in 2022 after multiple parties at homes near the university in 2021 caused thousands of dollars worth of damages to properties and vehicles.
Working alongside Hamilton police services the city created the safety initiative to discourage large unsanctioned gatherings using “zero-tolerance enforcement”.

The UDSI oversees the western section of the Westdale neighbourhood and the Ainslie Wood neighbourhood.
A property owner, host, or party attendee charged and convicted under the bylaw can face up to $10,000 for a first offence, and $25,000 for any additional offence related to a nuisance party.
Several administrative penalties – like attending a nuisance party or failing to leave a party when ordered to – can cost between $300 to $500 each.
