Niagara Regional Transit System a go after unanimous vote in Thorold

First Published:

A bid to combine local transit systems into one, inter-regional system in Niagara is a go.

Thorold city council unanimously voted in favour of amalgamating local transit systems, making it the seventh municipality in the region to do so.

St. Catharines mayor Walter Sendzik tweeted about the news last night:

Thorold joins Niagara-on-the-Lake, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Grimsby as the municipalities in favour of the single transit system. The city’s vote completes the triple majority required for the change to happen.

Currently, every town and city from Grimsby to Fort Erie has their own bus system, which makes it difficult to get from one area of the Niagara region to another.

The new amalgamated system is expected to be up and running by Jan. 2023.
