Niagara region to see $78M investment in transit projects

The Niagara region will be getting $78 million for investment in transit projects.

The money is coming from all three levels of government.

The federal government is kicking in $31 million, the province is giving $26 million and $21 million is coming from the municipalities.

Across the region, the money will fund 31 public transit projects.

That includes new buses, bus shelter renovations, new surveillance systems and improved pedestrian crossings.

Niagara Falls is building a new $4.4 million transportation hub on Bridge St. to increase access to local transit and connect commuters to GO regional transit.

It will also improve pedestrian safety in the area.

St. Catharines will be adding 21 new buses it its fleet, along with four new paratransit vehicles.

Transit providers will also get money for a new fare payment system that will allow riders to use one method of payment across the region.
