Niagara police charge elusive motorcyclist who taunted them in Fort Erie

First Published:

Niagara police have charged a 20-year-old motorcyclist who tried to bait them into a pursuit in Fort Erie at the beginning of April.

Officers were originally called to the area of Derby Road and Conway Place around 10 p.m. on April 7 after someone reported a motorcyclist driving dangerously.

Police later spotted a man who matched the description driving a red and white sports bike near Ridgeway and Roxborough roads.

Police say that the motorcyclist was travelling at a high rate of speed and performing wheelies, before driving up and down the street in an attempt to “bait police into a pursuit.”

Authorities say they opted not to initiate a pursuit out of a concern for public safety.

In an updated release, police say they were able to identify the suspect and charged him on Friday.

A 20-year-old man from Fort Erie faces four driving offences, including driving a vehicle while performing a stunt, operating a vehicle on highway without insurance, using a plate not authorized for the vehicle, and driving a vehicle with an improper licence.

Police have not released the name of the accused, but say they seized and impounded his Yamaha R6 bike for 14 days, which had been repainted black and grey.

The 20-year-old also had his driver’s license suspended for 30 days.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to contact police at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009558.
