The Canadian economy added over 10 000 jobs last month, and while the nation’s jobless rate dropped, all the gains were in part-time positions. The latest numbers raise questions about the quality of work available, but as some Niagara businesses say there is a lack of qualified workers.

Business has been steady for Vasco Caldas since he opened up his cafe, Casa das Natas, in Niagara Falls six months ago.

“I am the only pastry chef in this place. I am the sweet man. I do everything myself.”

He has since hired three employees- two of which are part time.

It’s a direction the Canadian economy has gone with as well.

The number of people working part-time increased by over 200 000 since last year, while full time gigs dropped by 30 000.

Most of those were in the service sector, but Caladas admits it’s been a challenge.

“It is hard, to find good people. It is hard. A few come and show one day and next day don’t come into work.”

Palm Garden 3nee restaurant has had the same problem. They’ve only been open a few months and co-owner Nicole Ramsamooj has hired one part-time employee for when the store gets busy. Otherwise she’s relied on friends and family to cover shift for now.

Ramsamooj has received a number of resumes for the minimum wage positions, but says many aren’t qualified to serve or bartend.

Niagara is on par with the province’s unemployment rate of 6.3%.

Ramsamooj is hopefull she’ll find a candidate by the end of the month.
