New pool rules in Hamilton

Anyone wanting a new pool in Hamilton will soon be required to put a fence completely around it. That’s in addition to any backyard fence that may already exist.

The new rule requires a fence within a fence on all four sides of any new pool in the city. It must be 1.5 metres, that’s five feet and it must allow for the pool to be visible, so no solid wood fences.

It’s believed the move will increase safety for children, but not everyone agrees. Councillor Donna Skelly says it’s heavy handed and adult supervision should be the ultimate safeguard, while Councillor Robert Pasuta suggested that the four-sided fence creates a false sense of security.

Right now the by-law requires a three sided fence, but the new rule set to take effect in January.
