A Turkish search and rescue team pulled a man still alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Kathmandu, Nepal today.

He had been buried under debris since the earthquake struck on Saturday. His condition isn’t known but he appeared to be conscious when his rescuers gently pulled him from the wreckage.

And with every passing hour more bodies are pulled from the rubble. Officials now say more than 4,000 people are known to have died.

Thousands of displaced survivors of the catastrophic earthquake have set up a makeshift tent city in downtown Kathmandu. A massive tent camp was set up for locals in a central park.

Nearly 2,000 homes were damaged in the quake. Many lost their homes completely, while others didn’t feel safe staying in their houses out of fear of building collapsing the from aftershock tremors.

Dozens of countries and aid organizations are helping Nepal.

Canada is sending more supplies to the region. The federal government says it will match all eligible contributions to the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund until May 25th. It has also deployed relief supplies from emergency stockpiles in Mississauga to help immediate needs.

The Harper government has dispatched advance elements of its highly specialized disaster assistance response team. Troops and supplies left yesterday aboard one of the air force’s massive C-17 transports.

Ottawa has given $5 million towards humanitarian relief, and the Ontario government announced this morning that they will contribute $1 million to the Red Cross to help their efforts in Nepal.
