Guy Bantleman says his brother has been in Canada since June and one of the conditions of the release was to keep it quiet.
In a statement to CHCH News, Neil Bantleman said, “Five years ago I was wrongfully accused and convicted of crimes I did not commit and furthermore never occurred. I applied for clemency which I am pleased was granted by Indonesia last month upholding essential justice and human rights. Tracy and I are very happy to be home and reunited with our family”.
In 2014, Bantleman was working as a teacher at a prestigious Indonesian school when he and several other school staff members were accused of assaulting young boys.
The abuse allegedly went on for more than a year and involved several adult men. The six-year-old alleged victim had no injuries and his mother was suing for $125 million.
Bantleman was convicted and then acquitted. He was freed for six months, but his passport was not returned. Then Indonesia’s supreme court overturned the acquittal and he was thrown back in jail. Bantleman’s release reportedly comes after months of tense negotiations.
In the statement, Bantleman expressed his gratitude to the Canadian government for working tirelessly for his release.
