Neighbour arrested in Hamilton Mountain homicide

First Published:

A man is dead and another is in custody following an overnight shooting on Hamilton Mountain.

Hamilton police were called to Magnolia Dr. near Mohawk Rd on the west mountain around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Emergency crews found a 28-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics performed life-saving measures but he was later pronounced dead.

26-year-old Mark Duckett was arrested after turning himself into police.

Investigators say an altercation broke out between the victim and suspect, who were next door neighbours.

Three hours before the shooting, police say they received a 911 call from the victim’s house complaining about his neighbours behaviour. Police did not elaborate on what exactly they neighbour was doing that caused the victim to call police.

“Police did attend, and spoke to him and warned him not to continue with that behaviour, and was made aware of any potential consequences.” Det. Sgt. Dave Oleniuk, Hamilton police.

Police believe Duckett broke though his neighbours door and shot him. They have recovered the gun, which police say was legally owned by someone at the residence.

Duckett has been charged with first degree murder and made his first court appearance on Tuesday.
