In one of the worst mass shootings in Canadian history, 14 women were gathered and murdered at École Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.
Unfortunately, women continue to be the victims of violence and a group at McMaster University gathered Thursday to share their stories and ideas for solutions.
For many attending, December 6, 1989 will never be forgotten.
Wednesday’s vigil aimed to remind people of the bloodshed and to work together to put an end to violence against women.
Three roses were used to represent those murdered in Montreal, five female students killed while attending McMaster over the years and the third was a reminder of the ongoing epidemic of missing or murdered Indigenous women.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement where he made suggestions on how we can change as a society, he said in part that, “taking action means supporting women’s leadership, and creating more opportunities for women to lead. It means listening to women, recognizing their contributions, and fighting inequalities that put the most vulnerable at greater risk.”
