Narendra Modi meets with Air India families today

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in British Columbia with Stephen Harper this evening, as part of his historic visit to Canada. Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi wrapped up his visit to Toronto by greeting the families of some the victims of Air India terrorist attack. Melissa Raftis was there.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Harper laid wreaths at the Toronto memorial to the victims of the Air India terrorist attack, before meeting with some of the victims’ family members.

Om Chopra lost is mother and father when a bomb exploded aboard the plane off the Irish coast June 1985. 329 people were killed on the flight that left Toronto and Montreal for India. Most of the victims were Canadians of Indian decent.

“The memory came back…the memory came back. The Prime Minister came from both the countries. I feel good. I feel very good” said Mr. Chopra.

Bal Gupta’s wife was killed on the flight. He takes the Prime Ministers’ meeting as a good sign. “It really signifies that both the governments are really serious about fighting terrorism. Let us hope they can control these terrorists.”

Earlier in the day, at a meeting with business leaders, Prime Minister Modi praised Canada as a country with a small population with great strengths. His visit marks the first time in more than four decades an Indian Prime Minister has made a standalone trip to Canada.
