A mother’s cry for help after another suicide attempt at the Burgoyne bridge in St. Catharines

First Published:

It’s a desperate mother’s plea for help after her daughter attempted suicide on the Burgoyne bridge in St. Catharines. Luckily the teen survived, but her mother fears it won’t be long before she is released from the hospital and left to harm herself again.

Over the last month, at least three people have jumped over the railing. In the latest suicide attempt, an 18 year old woman jumped over into the water but unlike others, she survived.

Niagara regional police say officers had a brief interaction when they arrived at the bridge with the woman before she jumped. Because of this interaction the SIU is now investigating.

“Right now she’s in a lot of pain. She doesn’t want to be there but she needs to be kept there. ”

The mother, who we aren’t naming to protect her daughters identity, says she’s at the St. Catharines general hospital and has been in and out of that hospital for years. She says her daughter has never been taken seriously and is always released shortly after being admitted.

It’s a comment repeated over and over again by others who volunteer in mental illness support groups.

St. Catharines city council is exploring prevention measures that can be installed at the bridge.
