HAPPENING NOW:

How Seneca College has evolved over the years

Believe it or not, it is already time to think about you or your child’s post secondary future. Marianne Marando is the Vice-President-Academic at Seneca College. She joined us this morning with more.

Marando says Seneca College has evolved since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, like many other colleges and universities across the country. She says Seneca is most proud of the school’s four delivery options for students.

The four options are: in person, virtual, hybrid (both in person and virtual), flexible.

“We’re most excited about our flexible delivery option,” said Marando. “What that means is the professor teaches in the class and there are some students learning in that class, but the professor also broadcasts virtually, so some students are at home participating in the class virtually… that really gives students the choice to participate in class the way that meets their needs.”

Seneca College is also offering new degrees, including the Honours Bachelor of Engineering Degree. Marando says all the college’s degrees were designed with employer needs in mind, so they all include work integrated learning components.

“Our faculty are all experts who have tremendous experience in the field,” said Marando. “That really gives students an edge when they are ready to hit the workforce.”

There is a program at Seneca that allows students to start a degree with advanced standing.

“Not many of our students are ready to come straight into a degree…maybe they’re not sure what they want to do, maybe they aren’t ready,” said Marando. “So, many students pathway from a diploma to a degree.”

Marando says students can get advanced standing going from a two-year diploma into a degree. She says for those students, Seneca offers degree to diploma scholarships. The college has millions of dollars in support funds for students.

“Not everyone gets to the finish line the same way, so we have a lot of support for students, however they want to enter our degrees in terms of financial support and academic support,” said Marando.

The new My Seneca student portal provides students with all the information they will need to be ready to face their academic journey. Marando says it is set up in a format that is familiar to students and reminds her of the format of Facebook.
