Missing swimmer presumed drowned in Lake Erie

First Published:

Update: The missing swimmer was found Sunday morning near the north shore of Lake Erie in Halloway Bay. Police say no foul play is suspected.

The Marine Unit is continuing to look for a Waterloo man who is presumed to have drowned in Lake Erie near the Sherkston Beach.

On August 27th around 1:30 p.m., police were called to the beach for six people, two adult males, and four children, who had become distressed in the 5-6 foot waves.

Members of the public were able to rescue all the children and one adult from the waters.

Lifeguards from Sherkston Shores campground attempted to rescue the second adult, a man in his 30’s, who was not able to return to shore, however, lifeguards and witnesses lost sight of him in the turbulent water.

The NRPS Marine Unit, the Port Colborne Marine Auxiliary Rescue Unit and the Canadian Coast Guard assisted with the rescue but search efforts were suspended around 4 p.m. due to thunder and lightning in the area.
