Melissa Raftis’ TIFF diary

It’s not all glitz and glamour on the red carpet. In fact, a lot of time at the Toronto International Film Festival is spent waiting around. Melissa Raftis gives us a behind the scenes look at TIFF.

Not every red carpet can be Ryan Reynolds good: “I hear you’re giving out high fives.” “Yes, lets do it.” So when you don’t get an interview, you hope it goes a little more Kate Winslet: “this is a smile and wave, smile and wave, thanks for coming”; than Tom Hardy.

To get a quick shot of Johnny Depp walking by, first means standing around for hours in cramped conditions. There is plenty of time to casually chat up your neighbours, including your camera op. “Oh hi, Duane — are you having fun?” He answers with a shake of the head. “How about a lollipop to cheer you up?”

You know what? Suckers for everyone! That’ll keep ’em quiet – until about 30 minutes before a film’s premiere, when the stars arrive, and the scramble to get an interview begins.

After gathering a few clips, it’s back to our live truck to make sense of the chaos before broadcasting it to you.
