Massive Flamborough fire burns 2 barns to the ground

First Published:

Hamilton firefighters battled a massive fire that burned down two barns in Flamborough Thursday afternoon.

Chief Dave Cunliffe said crews responded to the rural property on Regional Road 97 around 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports of heavy black smoke that could be seen from many kilometres away.

A number of vehicles, hay bales and a significant quantity of hand sanitizer being stored on the property were also damaged.

Cunliffe said emergency responders quickly worked to protect a two-storey house located near the fire.

The Ministry of the Environment, the Hamilton Conservation Authority and Grand River Conservation Authority have been notified given the amount of hand sanitizer and water being used on the property for firefighting purposes.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was also notified based on the size and nature of the fire.

Cunliffe said the fire was still active Thursday evening and was expected to continue into the night.

No injuries have been reported and the fire is not considered suspicious.
