Man charged in fatal crash in Welland: Niagara police

A man has been charged in a fatal crash in Welland earlier this week.

Officers were called to a collision on Webber Rd., near Murdoch St. around 7 a.m. Monday.

A vehicle was on fire in the ditch.

Officers joined members of the public trying to rescue the driver, who was trapped in the car. They were unable to get him out of the vehicle.

A 39-year-old Welland man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing his identity.

Police say he was alone in the car and had been traveling in a group of vehicles before the crash.

Stephen Bangsund–Salter, 30, was arrested and charged with dangerous operation causing death.

Police are still investigating what happened and are asking businesses or homes in the area to review their security camera footage between 6:50 a.m. and 7:10 a.m.

People with dash board cameras who were driving in the area are also asked to look over their footage.
