Man charged after war memorial vandalized in St. Catharines

Niagara police have charged a 24-year-old man after a war memorial was damaged in St. Catharines.

Police responded to Victoria Lawn Cemetery around 7:20 a.m. on Monday.

Officers discovered the flowers and lighting systems at the Legion War Memorial had been torn out and strewn around the memorial.

Additional officers were sent to the scene and located a suspect who was attempting to flee the area.

Tristan Mason, of no fixed address, has been charged with mischief to object associated with war memorial and two counts of fail to comply with probation.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Police believe there may have been witnesses to the vandalism.
