Man arrested after assaulting police officer and attempting to escape

On Tuesday February 9, just before 2 p.m. an officer approached a man that he recognized operating a vehicle in the area of Stirton Street and Cannon Street East.

The man was wanted by police for a number of criminal offences.

The officer told the man he was under arrest, and as he went to handcuff him, the man assaulted the officer and took off.

The officer eventually caught up with the man and arrested him.

After being arrested, a search of the man resulted in the discovery of over 45 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine, multiple communication devices, a small amount of cash with other evidence consistent with trafficking the substance.

The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to the hospital but is expected to recover.

Charged is 28 year old Eric Haines from Hamilton.
