Oakville man arrested in online extortion investigation by Halton police

A 25-year-old Oakville man has been charged after an online extortion investigation by Halton police.

The investigation in the summer, after two separate victims reported being contacted on social media.

Police say the suspect asked the victims to send a nude image in exchange for money.

The suspect said the image would only be viewed for a few seconds before getting deleted. But police say the person was able to save a copy and threatened to distribute it unless more images were sent.

No money was exchanged.

The suspect distributed the images without consent. In one case the victim was younger than 18.

Nathan Haslett was arrested on Jan. 28. He’s charged with:

  • three counts – extortion
  • five counts – distribution of intimate image without consent
  • four counts – distribution of child pornography
  • three counts – possession of child pornography

Police believe there may be other victims.

Anyone who had contact with the online identity of “Jason Tottersmith” and/or “jay.totts” on Instagram or “jtottersmith” on Snapchat, is asked to contact police.
