People who like to cut down on their carbs, no longer have to avoid potatoes. That’s thanks to a new variety of potato being grown in our own backyard and it’s a first in Canada.

Carisma, the new type of potato being grown in Waterdown has a lower glycemic response, which is good news for people with diabetes or people watching their carbs.

“When we eat them they don’t spike our blood sugars so it’s more of an even response.” Jane Dummer.

Carisma isn’t a genetically motified potato, it’s a variety potato that has never been grown in Canada before.

“It originated from the Netherlands and Earth Fresh obtained exclusivity to this variety and decided to grow it in Ontario first.” Stephanie Cutaia, Earth Fresh Foods.

Right now the only farm in Canada to be growing this potato is in Waterdown, but they think that’ll expand in the next year. And what about the taste?

“It’s every bit as good as a yellow potato, it’s just the health benefits that make it shine.”

They have grown 28 acres of the potato this year, which means it’ll only be sold in Ontario and until they run out.
