Hollywood is in Niagara, along with a well known actor from the 80s. He’s best known for playing Jim Ignatowski in the hit sitcom “Taxi” and Doctor Emmett Brown in the “Back to the Future” trilogy. But for the next 20 days, Christopher Lloyd will be spending his time in Niagara Falls where he’s shooting a new film. Our Melissa Raftis caught up with the pop culture icon on the set of “88.”
In a dark corner of a dimly lit strip club off Lundy’s Lane, Christopher Lloyd quietly prepares to shoot a flashback scene for his upcoming film “88.”: “It is a darker role than I’m accustomed to which I love. It’s great to have amplitude and do something I haven’t done before. I’m delighted to be here.”
Billed as a fast paced story about a young woman seeking revenge for her lover’s death, *this* 88 looks like it’s shaping up to be a far cry from the one Lloyd’s fans may be expecting: “What did I tell you?! 88 miles per hour.”
While the actor says he’s happy to leave Doc Brown behind, Lloyd says he appreciates the continued success of ‘Back to the Future’: “So many generations now have seen the movie, it’s had a lot of impact on a lot of people and it’s great to be a part of something like that.”
“88” Director April Mullen has certainly made her own impact on Lloyd. This is the second film the Niagara Falls native has directed him in as they’ve previously teamed up for the horror comedy “Dead before Dawn.”
Lloyd: “She’s an absolute delight to work with. I mean she totally knows what’s going on what she’s doing and gives me a lot of confidence that she’ll keep me on track.”
Director April Miullen: “He (Lloyd) is so passionate about the craft and it’s always refreshing to see that. He’s been doing that for his whole life and I love to watch him work and really immerse himself and put 150% into whatever he does whether it’s Doc Brown or whether it’s Niagara Falls 88.”
If you’re in the Niagara Region for the next 20 days or so, keep an eye out for movie crews as they’ll be filming ’88’ in multiple locations all across Niagara Falls and Fort Erie.
What’s the significance of the title? No one on set would say. Although, as Melissa pointed out, ’88’ was the speed the Delorean needed to hit in order to go back to the future.
