Liberals to face confidence vote over proposed anti-corruption committee

First Published:

A dispute over an anti-corruption committee could trigger a federal election.

MPs are battling over the scope and composition of a proposed House of Commons committee.

The Conservatives want to create an opposition-dominated committee to investigate the WE Charity affair and other alleged corruption issues.

Previous parliamentary investigations into the scandal ended when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prorogued parliament.

Trudeau has declared that the vote on a Conservative motion will be a test of confidence in his government.

The Bloc Quebecois is planning to support the motion, but the NDP is calling it “over the top.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party won’t take part in a “farce” that gives Trudeau an excuse to force an election.

MPs are set to vote on this Wednesday afternoon.

The vote comes on the anniversary of the Trudeau Liberals’ minority government win.
