Large fire destroys metal recycling plant in Waterdown

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating a fire at a metal recycling plant in Waterdown.

Crews were called to the building on Middletown Rd. near Concession 4 West around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Additional crews had to be called in.

Fire officials say there were over 20 fire apparatus, including eight tankers providing a water supply.

Firefighters were on scene into the night and Thursday morning to extinguish hot spots.

Heavy machinery is on site to remove collapsed portions of the building.

The Ministry of the Environment has been notified.

The damage is estimated to be around $1.2 million.
