July 4 parade shooting leaves 6 dead, 30 injured

Police have not yet provided a motive for the shooting at an Independence Day parade in Chicago that left six people dead and at least 30 wounded.

The shooter opened fire at the parade in Highland Park around 10:15 a.m.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said, “several of the deceased victims” died at the scene and one died at a hospital.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the five people killed at the parade were adults, but didn’t have information on the sixth.

The attack was followed by a lengthy manhunt and the arrest of what police call a person of interest.

Highland Park Police say a police officer pulled over Robert E. Crimo III about 8 kilometres north of the shooting scene.

Crimo was detained several hours after police released his photo and warned that he was likely armed and dangerous.

The shooting was just the latest of many mass shootings in the United States. Schools, churches, and grocery stores community parades have all become killing grounds in recent months.
