Jaywalking

So far this year 84 pedestrians have been hit by vehicles on Hamilton’s roads and adding to the disturbing trend is the fact that many of those pedestrian were jaywalking.

Within ten minutes our cameras caught serveral people jaywalking across Bay st. near Main st. where just a short distance away, 2 seniors were hit by a motorcycle at Main st. and Summers lane. Hamilton police say that they may have started crossing the intersection while they had the right of way but at the time they were hit, there was a green light for oncoming traffic. The view of the motorcyclist that hit them was obstructed by a cube van and by the time the driver noticed the women, it was too late.

Last year there were 276 collisions involving pedestrians, the most we’ve had in 9 years. Of those, 4 pedestrains were killed.

Hamilton police say pedestrians should never assume drivers will stop for them. If you start to cross an intersection while the red stop hand is flashing, that could land you a $65 fine.
