IOC to give $925M to 2026 Olympic host

First Published:

The International Olympic Committee has committed to providing $925 million U.S.to the host city of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Calgary, which hosted the winter games in 1988, is among the cities considering a bid. Stockholm and Sapporo, Japan are seriously interested, while Erzurum, Turkey and Graz, Austria and a joint bid from cities in Italy are also in play.

A calgary bid corporation, Calgary 2026, was established last month. A calgary bid committee estimated the cost of the city hosting the 2026 winter games at $4.6 billion with games revenues covering almost half the cost, although that figure is under review.

The deadline to bid for the 2026 games is January and the host city will be announced in September, 2019.
