(Update)
Niagara Falls is glowing orange tonight courtesy of a student from Burlington — It’s lit up for the “30 hour famine”. It’s a fundraiser where students fast to raise money for food aid projects around the world.
So Stacy Grimshire had the honour of turning on the orange glow tonight. She organized the 30 hour famine at Robert Bateman High School, where they raised over 3,000 dollars. She herself raised 800.
So tonight’s illumination was a way for World Vision to say thanks. Sarah Bartley is with World Vision: “It’s very rare that we’re able to thank them properly for the contributions that they make all year round. so to be able to partner with Niagara Falls and to be able to do this as a give back is something were so excited to do and we know that stacy is really, really excited to do this as well.”
Orange is the signature colour of the 30 hour famine and thousands of teens across the world are fasting today and into tomorrow. Grimshire’s school held their event a few weeks ago so she was able to light the falls tonight. All the money raised by famine events is donated to food and water programs in developing countries.
World Vision provides clean water and teaches people about sustainable farming techniques. The idea behind the fast is to experience the hunger that comes with poverty.
Stacy said: “Just being hungry, you realize what everyone has to deal with all the time. We were just doing it for 30 hours so it’s kind of shocking to realize people have to do that all the time.”
