Niagara’s wineries are celebrating another successful grape harvest. To mark the end of the harvest, Minister of Agriculture Jeff Leal was on hand to hang a new sign at Ravine Vineyard Estate winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

According to the Grape Growers of Ontario about 53 000 tonnes of grapes were harvested by Ontario Grape Growers in 2015. About 4 000 tonnes of grapes were left on the vine last year for the ice wine harvest. That’s enough grapes to produce almost 730 000 litres of icewine.  Even with a mild winter farmers were able to harvest over a thousand more tons of grapes than the year before.

The minister says Niagara contributes $34.5 billion to Ontario’s GDP, he says a lot of that is thanks to the success of Niagara’s wine industry.
